Rhode Island Statewide Coalition Newsletter
July 19, 2010

From your RISC-y Business Editor, Harriet Lloyd

Just a note, as you are a regular RISC-y Business reader.  Having edited RISC-y Business early every morning for eight years, I hope you find the free e-newsletter informative as you begin each day, but I notice that you have not yet joined RISC, and I'm hoping you will (if I am mistaken, please let me know and accept my apology)!

Do you know that RISC is still a completely volunteer organization?  With the exception of two very part-time office staff members, a small group of volunteers does it all.  Everything we do is funded by memberships - those who join RISC provide the engine for our work.  RISC has been the lone voice, warning of the fiscal crisis that has, in fact, come to pass.  As a reader of RISC-y Business, I know you are 'up' on the details.  Never have Rhode Island taxpayers been in greater need of an advocate than today.

The case for joining RISC is powerful.  The following "Top Ten Achievements " crystallize some of the important accomplishments of the RISC organization and The RISC Foundation.  Our volunteers have been working 24/7, at considerable expense to both organizations, to fulfill their missions and to make a difference in the 2010 elections. Our joint efforts are directed to: controlling taxes; preserving the environment; improving education; electing honest, effective legislators; promoting transparency at all governmental levels; and, better informing the public.

Please review this list of accomplishments and visit www.statewidecoalition.com to see more of what we do for you, the Rhode Island taxpayer.  I think you'll quickly understand why we deserve your support.  I hope you will CLICK HERE TO JOIN, so that our work can continue and improve.

Many thanks for your readership, and please let me know if you have suggestions for RISC-y BusinessWon't you join me in supporting its work with a membership to RISC?  This is the year to help - the stakes have never been higher.

All the best and many thanks for your consideration,

Harriet

TOP TEN ACHIEVEMENTS

of

RISC & THE RISC FOUNDATION

  1. THE TAX CAP ACT OF 2006:  RISC was a major player in obtaining a limit on real estate taxes.  The act placed a cap of 5.5%, dropping .5% each year until it reaches 4.55 IN 2013.
  1. U.S. SUPREME COURT APPEAL:  RISC filed an amicus brief on the appeal from an adverse Circuit Court decision allowing the Narragansett Indian Tribe to take land into trust for potential development of a Casino in Charlestown.  The RISC brief was cited in the majority opinion of Justice Thomas and the victory has prevented a Casino in Charlestown.
  1. RISC-y BUSINESS NEWSLETTER:  Over 5,000 people receive this daily publication every day.
  1. THE MONEY TRAIL:  This transparency website distributes valuable official information and data.
  1. RISC AFFILIATES:  RISC provides support services to 11 affiliated taxpayer organizations.
  1. RISC BUSINESS NETWORK:  The RBN is the voice of R.I.’s business community in a multi-partisan effort to create a business friendly climate in R.I., through electing legislators who will restore economic stability and progress.
  1. MISQUAMICUT CONDOMINIUM:  RISC provided the legal assistance required to establish a reasonable height restriction for large-scale Oceanside buildings.
  1. THE RISC FOUNDATION:  Founded in 2007, the Foundation is actively engaged in educational and research projects of importance to all citizens of R.I.
  1. R.I.’S EDUCATION COMMISSIONER:  In 2008, RISC was the first R.I. voice to demand a new Commissioner of Education.  Within one year, R.I. introduced the new Commissioner, Deborah Gist, and a revised Board of Regents.
  1. RISC MEMBERSHIP GROWTH:  With over 4,000 members and 11 Taxpayer Affiliates, RISC is now the largest advocacy organization in R.I.  RISC members now reside in all 39 cities and towns in R.I.

In addition to these achievements, RISC continues to “fight the good fight” for issues such as:

Voter Initiative; public disclosure of legislative votes; term limits for legislators; creation of an office of Inspector General, single statewide health care and pension plans, and a host of other sound government initiatives.
